Mount Auburn Cemetery Expansion
Watertown, MA

Mount Auburn Cemetery, America’s first “rural” cemetery and now a major arboretum and tourist destination in addition to an active cemetery, has asked William Rawn Associates to develop a Master Plan for the use of one of the last open areas in the Cemetery. WRA’s plan locates a new Horticultural Center and Greenhouse, a non-denominational chapel, and cemetery service spaces as well as additional burial space and the cemetery operations yard. The first phases of the plan – the Horticultural Center and Greenhouse – are in construction documents and will be a LEED Platinum project utilizing geothermal and solar PV technology to save energy and rainwater collection for building and greenhouse use to save water. This new commitment to sustainability reinforces the Cemetery’s historical celebration of nature.

The building is fully integrated into the hillside, and is capped by a vegetated roof terrace.
